Substrates we paint and what each demands

Every substrate fails differently, so every substrate is prepared differently. Render moves and cracks in hairlines, so it takes a flexible acrylic system over a properly sealed surface, and fresh render is alkaline, so it gets an alkali-resistant sealer before colour. Brick needs coatings that breathe, because trapped moisture pushes paint off from behind. Cement sheet is stable, but its joints and fixings are the weak points, and they are set and sealed before coating.

Timber demands the most. Weatherboards expand and contract with every weather change, so the coating system has to flex with them, and heritage timber homes carry decades of old coats that are scraped and sanded back to a sound edge before priming. Tannin-rich boards get a stain-blocking primer so the timber does not bleed through the new colour.

Preparation is the paint job

Most of the hours on a proper exterior repaint are spent before the colour comes out, and that is how it should be. The job starts with a full high-pressure washdown to strip dirt, chalking paint and mould, the same washdown we deliver as a standalone pressure cleaning service. Once the surface is dry, flaking paint is scraped to a sound edge, the edges are feather-sanded so old layers do not show through, and bare patches are spot-primed.

Gaps get filled, not painted over. Joints around windows, doors, fascias and board ends are cleaned out and sealed with paintable exterior sealant, because open gaps are where water gets behind a paint film and starts the peeling that brings a whole job undone. New paint bonds to whatever sits under it; if that is chalk, dirt or loose film, the best paint on the market fails.

Coating choices for Sydney weather

Sydney exteriors face hard UV, salt-laden air and humidity that feeds mould, and the coating system is chosen for that exposure rather than pulled off a shelf. Premium 100% acrylic exterior paints hold their colour and flexibility under UV far longer than budget lines, which chalk and fade within a few summers on a north- or west-facing wall.

Colour choice is a durability decision as well as a style one. Very dark colours absorb heat and drive extra movement in timber and cladding, so on weatherboard we steer deep schemes toward heat-reflective formulations or the elevations that suit them. On timber, modern flexible acrylic topcoats move with the boards where old rigid enamels cracked, and near the coast, mould- and salt-resistant systems keep the film sound in permanently damp air.

Fences, gates and outbuildings

A freshly painted house behind a grey, weathered fence is half a job, so fences, gates, carports, sheds and other outbuildings are quoted and painted as part of the exterior scope. Timber paling and picket fences are washed down, cleared of loose fibres and flaking old coats, and finished in exterior-grade paint or stain on both faces where access allows.

Metal gates and railings are treated for surface rust and primed with a metal primer before top-coating, while sheds and carports get the same washdown-and-prime preparation as the house itself. Long fence runs suit spraying, which lays an even film across rough-sawn palings that a brush struggles to coat, with masking keeping overspray off paths, plants and the neighbour's side.

Working safely on 2-storey homes

That is the working standard, not a staged version of it. Height work is planned before it starts: ladders, planks and scaffold towers are matched to the wall, and upper sections are completed top-down so nothing drips onto finished work.

The ground gets the same respect as the wall. Drop sheets cover garden beds, paths and driveways under the work area, outdoor furniture is moved or covered, and light fittings, downpipes and window hardware are masked rather than painted around and picked at later. What decides an exterior painting quote

Exterior quotes are built on condition and access, not wall area alone. A sound, previously painted render in a similar colour is a wash, spot-prime and 2 coats; a weatherboard home shedding decades of old paint means days of scraping and sanding before priming even starts. The state of the substrate is the single biggest driver of price.

Height and access come next: a 2-storey home on steep ground or with tight side access needs more equipment and time than a single-level walk-around. Then colour: a deep colour change takes extra coats to cover cleanly. When is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in Sydney?

Sydney's climate lets exterior painting run for most of the year. The real constraints are surface temperature and moisture, not the calendar: paint is not applied in direct hot sun beyond the manufacturer's limits, onto damp substrates, or when rain is due before the film cures. Autumn and spring give the easiest conditions, summer work follows the shade around the house, and winter work runs on dry days with shorter application windows.

How long does exterior paint last in Sydney?

A properly prepared 2-coat premium acrylic system on render or brick delivers about 10 years of service in Sydney conditions. Timber weatherboards, fascias and window trims weather harder and want recoating sooner, closer to 5 to 7 years on exposed faces. Preparation is the deciding factor: paint applied over chalking or flaking film fails years early no matter what it cost per litre.

Do you pressure clean the house before painting?

Can you paint over flaking or peeling paint?
