Gordon mixes grand old homes on wide streets with newer apartments around the station and Pacific Highway. We paint both, with preparation matched to the surface rather than the postcode.
Award Painting works on both. Since 2007 we have painted period houses that need lead-safe preparation and heritage-appropriate colours, and strata buildings that need committee-ready scopes and minimal disruption to residents. Every job carries Licence 222321C and $20M public liability insurance.
Many Gordon houses sit inside heritage conservation areas, which means exterior colour changes may need to respect the character of the street. Our colour consultation, included free with every quote, draws on traditional Federation and interwar palettes: deep greens, Indian reds, creams and stone tones for walls and trims, with brighter accents kept to doors and fretwork. We can prepare a scheme suitable for a council enquiry if one is needed.
Preparation on these homes follows the age of the timber. Paint from before 1970 is treated as lead-bearing: wet scraping and sanding only, drop sheets sealed at the edges and waste bagged off site. Glazing putty, end grain and verandah boards get oil-based primer before any acrylic topcoat goes on.
The unit blocks east of the highway are a different job. Common areas, stairwells, lobbies and external facades are quoted as a fixed scope that an owners corporation can approve in one meeting, with staging that keeps entries and fire exits open. Facade work on taller buildings is planned with safe access in mind, whether that is scaffold, boom lift or rope access through a specialist partner.
Residents are told in advance which areas are being painted on which days, wet paint is signed and dries fast, and low-odour products are used in enclosed corridors. If you manage a Gordon building, see our strata painting page or ask for a maintenance program that spreads the work across financial years.
Gordon sits high on the North Shore ridge and takes weather from the west, so western walls, gables and timber windows get the full sun and the driving rain. Chalking paint, split putty and cracked render bands are typical on that side. Preparation is the job: we wash, scrape, fill and prime before any colour goes on, and choose a flexible acrylic system for render and a UV-stable enamel for timber.
On the shaded eastern and southern faces under Gordon’s heavy canopy, the problem flips to moss, mould and slow-drying surfaces. We treat those elevations, let them dry properly and schedule them for the driest days of the program.
Gordon is a few minutes from our base near Hornsby, so walkthroughs happen quickly and the quoting painter leads the job. We also work in Pymble, Killara, Lindfield and Turramurra.
The craft
Sharp tape lines, clean brushes, the right product for the right surface. Small habits, repeated on every job, are what a premium finish is made of.

Questions
Anything else? Call us or send a message and we will give you a straight answer.

Every quote starts with a free walkthrough. We look at the condition of the existing paint, access, the number of colours and how much trim there is, then put a fixed price in writing with preparation, coats, repairs and access itemised. Preparation overruns are carried by us, not added to your bill.
Yes. Award Painting Pty Ltd holds NSW Painting and Decorating Contractors Licence 222321C and carries $20M public liability insurance. Both are shown on every quote and can be checked against the NSW Fair Trading licence register.
Usually yes, as long as the scheme respects the character of the street. Repainting in similar colours is generally exempt; a major change may need a council enquiry. We prepare a traditional scheme during the free colour consultation and can supply the colour schedule in a form suitable for council.
Yes. Common areas are staged so entries, lifts and fire exits stay open, residents receive a schedule in advance, and low-odour, fast-drying products are used in enclosed corridors. Facade work is planned with the safest access method for the building.
A full interior of a 3 or 4 bedroom home usually takes 5 to 8 working days. A full exterior takes 1 to 3 weeks depending on size, access and how much timber needs preparation. You get a start date and a finish date in writing, and the same crew stays on the job from the first day to the last.
A colour consultation valued at $275 is included free with every quote. We look at the orientation of each wall, the roof and brick colours you are keeping, the street and the light under your trees, then test sample boards on the house rather than choosing from a chip.
