We paint Sydney homes, nurseries and workplaces with low-VOC and low-odour systems from the major manufacturers, scheduled so occupied spaces stay usable while the work happens. Award Painting holds Painting and Decorating Contractors Licence 222321C and carries $20M public liability insurance.

What low-VOC actually means

VOC stands for volatile organic compounds: the solvents in paint that evaporate into the air as the film dries. They are the source of fresh-paint smell, and of the headaches and irritation some people get from it. Every paint releases some VOCs while drying; the difference between products is how much.

Low-VOC paints reformulate that solvent content down to a small fraction of a conventional paint’s. In practice, that means a room that smells faintly of paint for hours instead of strongly for days, and air that clears with normal ventilation rather than lingering off-gassing. Manufacturers publish VOC content in grams per litre on their product datasheets, so the difference is measurable, not a marketing claim.

Who low-VOC painting is for

The strongest cases are the rooms people sleep in and the spaces that cannot shut. Bedrooms and nurseries top the list: they are occupied for 8 hours and more at a stretch, by the people most sensitive to air quality, and a nursery has a hard deadline for being back in service.

Medical and allied health rooms carry the same logic with a professional obligation attached: patients and practitioners return to the space quickly, so the air has to be right. And workplaces that trade through the repaint (offices, shops, waiting rooms) choose low-VOC for a commercial reason: staying open only works if staff and customers are not met by solvent smell. In every case the specification is doing the same job: keeping the space usable by the people in it.

Performance, without the greenwash

The old trade objection to low-VOC paint was performance: early formulations covered poorly and marked easily. That objection is out of date. The current low-VOC ranges from the major manufacturers cover, level and wear on par with their conventional lines, and the premium washable interior acrylics most Sydney homes are painted with are already low-VOC as standard.

We are just as straight about what we do not claim. Low-VOC painting reduces odour and off-gassing inside your rooms; it is not a carbon offset, and a tin of paint does not make a building green. The claim we stand behind is the one that matters to the people inside: cleaner air while the paint dries, and a room that is comfortable to occupy sooner. That is what the specification delivers, and it is all it delivers.

Ventilation and scheduling for occupied spaces

The paint does half the job; ventilation and sequencing do the rest. We paint occupied homes room by room, so there is always somewhere to be that is not drying, and bedrooms are painted early in the day so they air for hours before anyone sleeps in them.

In workplaces the sequence follows your trading: sections at a time, after-hours where the layout demands it, with drying time planned before staff or customers return. Air movement while paint dries is basic practice with any product; the difference with low-VOC systems is that the airing period is measured in hours rather than days. We plan that schedule at the quote, not on the day, so you know exactly which rooms are out of action and when they come back.

Freshly painted deep green front door with brass hardware
Does low-VOC paint smell?+

Far less, and for far less time. Every paint releases some odour while the film dries, but low-VOC formulations cut the solvent content to a small fraction of a conventional paint's, so a freshly painted room smells faintly for hours rather than strongly for days. With windows open and air moving, it clears with normal ventilation rather than lingering.

Is low-VOC paint the right choice for a nursery or bedroom?+

It is what we specify for them. Bedrooms and nurseries are occupied for long, unbroken stretches by the people most sensitive to air quality, so minimising odour and off-gassing matters most there. We paint those rooms early in the day, ventilate them thoroughly and set out a clear airing period, so the room is back in use as soon as the schedule allows.

Does eco-friendly painting cost more?+

For interior walls, no: the premium washable acrylics we specify from the major manufacturers are already low-VOC as standard, so the eco-friendly choice is a specification decision, not a budget one. Specialty ultra-low-odour products for sensitive environments sit at the top of the range, and where one is the right call we price it in the quote so the choice is yours.

Can we stay home, or keep trading, while you paint?+

Yes, that is the point of the specification. Homes are painted room by room so there is always usable space that is not drying, and workplaces are sequenced around trading: sections at a time, after-hours where the layout demands it, with drying time planned before staff or customers return. Low-VOC paint keeps the air comfortable while that happens; the scheduling does the rest.
